Book Week

This years theme for Book Week is Inspirational Figures. We have chosen to do Jane Goodall.

Today we have begun by finding out about her through our class book and the Internet. We have plotted her life on a timeline and tomorrow we will use this to write a biography.

We have also visited Oak Class and shared some of their favourite books.

Don’t forget to come to assembly this Friday to find out if we can get Jane Goodall into the ballon by convincing the parents that she is truely inspirational.

Other things this week include the travelling bookshop, the treasure hunt, book swap and second hand book sale.

Woodborough Maths Day

What a busy day it has been!

Cherry  class started off with a puzzle about frogs leaping or sliding over to other Lilly pads in order to get to the other side.  Most children figured out the least amount of movement necessary to achieve the result!

Next we turned out focus to our topic work on soil and earthworms.  The children cut 3length of wool to represent what they thought would be a small, average and giant fully grown earthworm.  They were all pretty similar in they results and amazed when they saw the actual sizes in real life! The smallest fully grown earthworm measures about 2 cm, average in the UK about 20-25 cm and the largest species grows to an impressive 350 cm!

Next we measured our own height and compared it to the smalles and the average size earthworm.  The children are about 65 ish times bigger than the smallest and 6.5 times bigger than the average worm.

In the afternoon the children tried to figure out how to move a chicken, a fox and some corn across a river without one getting eaten by another.  The children can explain this to you in more detail. Almost all were able to solve this puzzle.  Well done.

A lot of fantastic problem solving Maths today.  If there is still any brainpower left, have another play at Times Tables Rockstar. The battle will be over at 6 p.m. tonight!

Anti bullying week

This week is anti bullying week and this years theme is CHOOSE RESPECT.

We had an assembly about this and discussion in class. The main points were –

Respecting ourselves, property and each other

Being fair and kind

Being respectful of skin colour or religion

Respect is thinking and acting in a positive way

We looked at images and decided which is good and bad respect

We thought about ways to show respect .

Evacuation day

What a brilliant day we had today as part of our ‘We will remember them topic’ the children were transported off and away from their parents and we spent some time thinking about how the evacuees would have felt and what happened to them next.

We heard the air raid siren and hid under our desks for safety.

We made litttle suitcases and filled them with the things that the children would have taken. We then made a start on our soft toys , we Cole ted our materials from the materials rationing shop and used our templates to calculate how much we needed.

We next discussed the ‘Choosing’ which is when the children we send home with different families.

We made feelings graphs to show how this would have felt.

we learnt war songs by Vera Lynn and then got ready for our street party in the afternoon.

well done everyone what a great day.
